The Newbie

My first Event the San Lotano Event Lake Mary, FL

On Friday night I went to my first cigar event. I was hoping to meet Cigar Maker AJ Fernandez, but a family matter did not allow AJ to be there. My prayers go out to AJ and his family.

I did however have the pleasure of meeting Kris Katchourian, Mike Julfaian, and Jeffrey Groover.  These gentlemen were very engaging, knowledgeable, and shared information that a newbie like me found invaluable.

I am just starting to enjoy and even understand cigars. I introduced myself To Jeffrey and told him we had a little blog about cigars that we had just started. I also explained that I was a very new cigar smoker (The Newbie) and I was drawn to the brand from all the reviews I had read. The oval has gotten so much praise that I had bought one before the event but hadn't had a chance to try it. Kris then interjected and gave me a corona to smoke. I immediately dropped everything, cut the end, and lit the cigar. Kris said that the true test of a quality cigar was in the ability to get flavor, and smoke from a corona with a 44 vs the toro or robusto with a 54. The cigar started out with the bite or pepper that many cigars have, but as smoked further it smoothed out nicely and was just a joy to smoke. Kris said he liked the corona for a quick and easy smoke when he didn't have time to smoke the larger versions. I put Kris on the spot and asked him what does he smoke other than the San Lotanos, he did admit to smoking the man o wars once in a while, but he liked the San Lotanos more and I had to laugh because the Man O Wars are also made by AJ Fernandez. Jeffrey was smoking the Connecticut and he said they were his favorite.

While we enjoyed our cigars I tried to ask the right questions and get answers that made sense to me. I asked what does San Lotano do in making the cigars to get the premium quality of their cigars compared to other companies. Kris stated it started with AJ "he is a genius when it comes to getting the right blends to make a great cigar". Kris the said one of the differences in their production was in the fermenting of the tobacco. I then of course asked what is involved in the actual fermenting of the tobacco and how it is done. He told me it has to do with turning the leafs and that most companies don't want to turn them as long or as often due to the damage that can be done to the leaf.  The more the leaf is moved the higher probability of damage to the leaf creating more loss of the product but Kris said AJ didn't care as much about that, he cares more about the quality of the product. Well AJ in my opinion you have done a great job. I thoroughly  enjoyed my oval to the end. I just kind of hung around and watched the progress of the event and the selling of cigars. I have been in sales basically all my adult life and watching Jeffrey interact with the people was a joy. Jeffrey was very engaging with the customers in the store answering questions, making recommendations, and just having fun. I think the most fun was with a customer who had earlier bought another cigar for twice as much money and he only smoked the first third and put it out. Jeffrey engaged the gentleman and his 4 friends and had them laughing high fiving, and busting each others balls. They ended up buying 5 cigars each.

I can see why this is such a great cigar, oh and by the way I was also smoking my second cigar of the night. The Connecticut was very smooth and creamy so you think hmmm must be wimpy, nope halfway through I had to get a stool to sit on, it snuck right up on me. Ok sorry about that ramble. The reason I think the San Lotano  line is so successful is the people . Good people going the extra mile to get the right blend, good people to ship and make sure the orders are right, Mike you must have thought I forgot about you. Good people marketing them. So Kris, Mike, and Jeffrey thank you for an enjoyable evening of cigars, conversation, and brotherhood of the leaf.

Thank you Corona Cigar company  in Lake Mary for this great night, Andrew and Tommy thank you for your help.

Just a side note this morning at Golf I smoked the Oval Toro I have had resting for a short 3 weeks, and it was an absolute joy to smoke and Kris it was even smoother than the Corona.

Famous Smoke Shop now known as FSS

If you have read some of the blog posts from the beginning you will know I have tried a lot of different cigars, got some sampler packs, and cherry picked cigars I wanted from the cigar auctioneer.   I am going to say that I am very happy with most of my selections. So far I have had some very good experiences. The  Perdomo lot 23 was a complete surprise because of everything I had read was very similar to what I had read about the Patel sampler below. Unfortunately I did not like any of these cigars and only the Vudu made it to the halfway point. I had ordered these and shared the pack with someone else and I felt so bad that I filled his need with a Padron 3000 and I am going to throw him another couple to make it up to him.

Amilcar Perez Castro Robusto Maduro
Patel Next Generation Robusto Natural
Signature Rocky Patel Robusto Maduro
Vudu Robusto Maduro

Now to be fair I also have gotten some absolutely wonderful cigars in samplers and packs that I have gotten from FSS, so not all sampler packs are bad, but again those are rookie mistakes that I know will happen again. The Cain club fifty pack got 8 cigars for $19 and if the rest are anywhere close to what the F 550 was this was a homerun and I mean over the Green Monster and on to Yawkey Way. I will let you know I am Smoking the Cain Daytona on Sunday playing golf, because after all it is Race Week, and the Daytona 500 will be run that day and if it as good as the other Cain I will probably smoke the second one too.

My first order of auction items was getting out of control and when I looked at the shipping, I was being charged $6.99 for every item I won. I was pretty sure I had marked my orders to be consolidated but I really didn't know for sure. I called FSS and talked to a wonderful woman who helped me make sure that I wouldn't get creamed by shipping and taint my feelings toward my new past time. Since that phone call everything has been perfect, and I couldn't have asked for a better buying experience. I have continued to buy accessories and cigars from Famous and will continue to do so. The items always come very well packed and protected, the orders are perfect, and the packing list didn't have prices.

I have gotten 42 cigars from the auctioneer, 4 humidors including my travel one, A golf cigar holder, a plastic carrying case, and a new cutter. I am done now I just have to relax and smoke some cigars. I have made other purchases but not everything comes from the FSS.... but more on that another day.

THANK YOU FAMOUS SMOKE SHOPS it's a pleasure doing business with you,

The Knuckle Dragger

The Knuckle Dragger from Cro Magnon
I will have to admit the waiting has been tough, I have read so many articles and experts just loving this cigar. I wanted to experience it with no rush, no obligations, just a newbie and his cigar. I am cooking on the grill but that's relaxation for me too. Nice fresh almost a fresh hay in the barn smell after the cut. The cool draw was slightly peppery. The light was a biting start, but a good bite and lasted almost the whole 1st third.  As you can see the burn is smooth and the line is consistently straight. The draw from the start is perfect all the way to the nub. I am also enjoying an ice cold Belgian white shock top with my Knuckle dragger. The second third smoothed out and was very nice. I may be looking for too much but mostly I got a leathery taste that was good but not very complex with a multitude of flavors I was expecting. check out the dark oily wrapper and the long cool ash.

The last 3rd got back to some bite and finished off very nicely. I enjoyed The Knuckle Dragger to about an inch and a half nub. I have several more of these in the humidor and will periodically update the opinions and feelings about this cigar.

The good news is I have several of these I am sending to the aficionado to try and see what someone who smokes the very best cigars in the world thinks.

Another day of Golf

We played golf again this morning and when we started it was a frigid 57 degrees but was 70 by the time we were done. I brought 2 cigars with me. I offered old car guy the opportunity to choose which one he wanted. the Arturo Fuente Gran reserva or the Perdomo lot 23. I told him my research had the Perdomo lot 23 about 80% of the people liked it. He then chose the Gran Reserva. I am really glad he did, because I had the Perdomo.  I wasn't ready for this cigar, I was anticipating something more in line with the Rocky Patel signature. The Perdomo was a delight from the original smells, the cold draw, the lighting and all the way through. the first 3 or 4 puffs had a peppery start and then smoothed right out. still in the 1st third of this cigar and I was already getting the smooth creamy caramel feeling of this cigar. The burn on the cigar was even for the most part, not perfect but not a detriment either.

a nice long cool ash with a salt and pepper look to it. Please excuse the coffee cup but my golf cigar holder won't be here til next Wednesday. I was playing golf and during a wait, at about the halfway point of the cigar, it went out. I let it sit for about 10 minutes, cleaned up the area and relit the cigar. It just stayed tasty right up to the very end. I haven't started putting numbers on my tastings yet but if i did this one would start with a 9. My grading system is would I buy a box of these or not. My humidor capacity at this time is limited to about 65 cigars so a box would be hard to do, however I would definitely buy a 5 pack and gladly offer this to anyone interested in a cigar with a medium body and flavor.

Old car guy doesn't breakdown a cigar but I always try to pry his feelings out about the cigar he is smoking. All I can tell you is he enjoyed the Arturo Fuente very much. He said it would be somewhere between the top 10 and 20 cigars he ever smoked. He has been smoking cigars for 20+ years so I think that means it was good.

The Golf, up until this year I probably played 100 rounds of golf over 26 year period, and hadn't played at all for the last 5 years. I don't know why but last April I just decided I was ready to play golf again. I play at least once a week and every other week I get 2 rounds. I love being here in Central Florida because pretty much any day I want I can get a round of golf in for under $40 and that's on the high side. Today I got 2 pars and 5 bogeys, I am finally starting to get better.

Some Great deals but do I have room?

I have been spending a lot of time reading and researching different cigars and brands. I remember running across The Nestor Miranda name and high reviews, so when Cigar Auctioneer put the seconds on auction for $1.00 I bid on it and won 3 cigars for $3.00, but then I had to take freight into consideration at $6.99 per order, so I looked for some items that I either needed, or really wanted. I need a travel case for going to the golf course instead of a baggie so I bid on 3 different models and lost on a leather pocket one that went for $19, I try to get really good deals otherwise I'll pass, or let the other buyers get it. I went next for the Csonka survivor travel case and won that bid for $15.00. I won that one and feel good about it since the best deal I can find anywhere else is $17.95, and most for mid $20's. I need 1 or 2 more deals to spread the $6.99 shipping costs to really make this a bargain. How about these, Gurkha Ancient Warrior Torpedo 5 Pack for $16.00 that's $3.20 a stick, saves around $2 per stick, and from everything I have read, I am looking forward to smoking these, and having extra's in my box. I splurged on 1 Oliva Master Blends 3 Robusto for $5 but again the cheapest I have seen this one is $9.20 per stick. If you remember from my earlier post I had a Cigar fall out of the golf cart while I was hitting the ball, so I got a cigar golf holder for $4 and a new cutter for $5. I am all done for a while, I am going to be out of room in 2 humidors and I have lots of really great cigars, according to all the reviews, to try.

Okay I have lost my mind but I just put a bid on a humidor for $1 and since I have the exact one already I truly hope I win.

While out there looking for all things cigar I came across the funniest blog.

http://crapnetwork.com/crapcigar/    They smoke all kinds of Cigars and let you know what is crap, and what they deem to be decent. Good stuff

Signature Series by Rocky Patel Toro Cigars

This cigar was rated very high on the website where I bought it, so I anticipated a nice smoke. It was very easy to light and the burn was even all the way to the end. The draw was so tight  I had to puff it 3 times to get a good smoke. The first 3rd was very heavy on the pepper almost to the point of being bitter so between that and having to really pull on it to smoke almost gave up.

I decided to keep going and the second half smoothed out very nice but the draw never got any better. I was looking for something to hook me get me to love this cigar but it never came. I wouldn't buy this again, and if it was part of a sampler I would discount it when figuring out the pricing of the package. This was my first Rocky Patel and I will say I was very disappointed since I have several others in my humidors, I am hoping the others are better. As always when talking about a cigar this is just my taste and as a newbie  I don't know what I am talking about but I do know what I like.

The other day I had a Cain F 550 and after some reflection I did like that cigar and I am glad I have a couple more to try in my box to evaluate. I will try one while relaxing, or reading instead of on the golf course to see if  I fall in love with it. The taste was so much better than the Patel and it was coming unraveled.

The First Lightings

We hit the golf course this morning our typical early time. My friend the old car guy, (I can say that it is one of his e-mail addresses) smokes 2-3 cigars a week as a rule so I was excited to get his feedback on this mornings cigar. This morning we had the Cain F 550. I lit mine on the 6th hole and was enjoying a very nice mild smoke, but unfortunately it got knocked out of the cart and the wrapper unraveled. I was able to save it and maintained a very nice burn, though a little ragged compared to the one I am smoking tonight. Old car guy waited til the tenth hole to light his. He lights it up and the next thing I know he is gushing on how nice a cigar it was. OCG usually smokes a Romeo and Juliet, he's not sure which one. Throughout the smoke I am trying to get him to tell me what flavors he was experiencing etc. The best I could get was Oh my God this is a great cigar.

My impressions of the Cain F 550 were it was very smooth with little to no backbite. I was trying to get some of the flavors of the cigar throughout the smoke, and even though it was mess it still was very good, but  I would say bland. Now I am a newbie so I did get a little bit of a nicotine buzz, but it did not knock me off my feet. So overall a nice cigar, smooth, light tasting, with a hint of a creamy feeling at the end and I did smoke it to a nub. Am I going out to buy a box of these no probably not. I don't feel I am ready yet to give this or any cigar grade yet, but I did like it.

Later in the day my wife asks what do we want for dinner, I say how about a burger on the grill. That was to give me an excuse to smoke another stogie I have been dying to try. Now I am grilling so that also means Yuenglings.  I live in a condo so I have to use the community charcoal grill right out my back door. I have lit the charcoal and while they heat up I am writing this and enjoying  my CAO OSA lot 50 very much. Now this cigar is loaded with pepper and I like it very much, and I understand what it means now. The burn on this cigar is perfectly even, not even the slightest variation. A very nice cool burn, with long even ash. the 1st third was peppery but the second third smoothed right out, and goes very well with my ice cold Beer. I am starting to understand the cigar Jargon, this has a leathery taste to it, very nice. Near the end and I am getting a little bite to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar and am very glad I got 2 of them, but with 47 more cigars to smoke I still won't be going out to buy a box right away but just might in the future.

The Second Order Came In

So you saw the list of the easy to acquire cigars locally. Got the Four kicks, San Lotano Oval, Padrone 1964 anniversary, Undercrown, Tatuaje 7th reserve, and ordered the Knuckle Draggers.  Still hunting for the rest and need to smoke some of these anyway. The second order came in and there were some good cigars and most importantly the second humidor.

Tomorrow the smoking begins with the Cain F 550 on the golf course

The Plan

For me to learn what is a good cigar I feel it is necessary to smoke good cigars. I have poured through the reviews, studied the statistics and come up with a shortlist of the best of 2011 new cigars to try. My original choices had several of those already on their way or already in humidor #1.  The other cigars are all well thought of just not the best in class.

This is my list of cigars I am going to try to sample above and beyond the ones I already have. These should help me develop opinions, and taste. If you can think of a cigar that I should try please let me know. I will also make sure the aficionado also samples so we can compare.

Ones I can buy locally without to much hassle.

Liga Privada T52

Undercrown

San Lotano oval

Padrone 1964 anniversary series

Olivia series V Maduro

E P Carillo  New Wave Ct

Here is the list of the ones that are not going to be as easy to obtain, whether they are sold out or can't be locally bought

Cromagnon Knuckle Dragger I am seriously curious

Emilio cigars Grimalkin AF1 AF2  are all received well but I want to try the Grimalkin 1st.

Crowned Heads Four Kicks

Casa Magna Domus Magnus

Tatuaje several to choose from haven't decided which one yet

Hopefully I will be able to get through that list and start on some of the new 2012 smokes and in January 2013 make my own best of list.  The IPCPR 2012 is going to be in Orlando this year and I would love to go. I have the Blog but how do I go about getting the credentials to go. hmmmmmmm

Tomorrow will be my first sampling, we are playing golf in the morning and I have 2 Cain F 550's  to try. I will let you know my thoughts.

A conversation between the Newbie and the Aficionado

After the original order was placed, and I went nuts (see yesterdays Post) I asked the Aficionado a question about humidors.

The Aficionado
I have three humidors, but am only using two, my travel one and the 500 count one in my office at home. I really don’t have any need for the third one at the moment, but I have thought about putting it in my office.

El Paso’s extremely low humidity makes keeping a humidor more of a challenge than other places. Where you’re at, you might never have any issues, but here getting a passive system to stay above 60% is a nightmare. I finally got a cigar oasis system, and I’ll never go back. It is an electronic system that checks the humidity every 5 seconds. If it drops, the fans come on and add humidity to the humidor, if it is high, it stays off until the humidity drops. It stays spot on 70 unless I open it, and I couldn’t be happier.

They come in all sizes for different size humidors and run about 100.00. For my travel humidor I just use a humidipac, a special pouch that keeps smaller humidors at a specific humidity. They are great, and frankly I would use them on any humidor up to about 25 cigars.

Always use distilled water, and you can use some propylene glycol solution if you want, but don’t use that with an oasis system.

You’ll need a good cutter, and a nice torch lighter, and a good cigar ashtray is a big plus too. Trying to use a cigarette ashtray is a pain in the neck.

The last thing I might recommend would be a cigar diary. They make them specifically, but you can use any small spiral notebook. Tape or glue the band, make any notes you want about the cigar, such as texture, country it was made in, wrapper and blend, and any tasting notes. Most importantly give it your own rating.

No matter what rating someone else gives, the most important thing is what you think, and how you like it. Cigar Aficionado rates the Padron Aniversario 1926 as one of their highest rated cigars year in and year out, but I personally think the 1963 is the better cigar. Both are good, and highly rated, but for my money the 63 is far and away the better cigar, and I have had many smokers agree with me. At the end of the day, it isn’t about cost, or ratings or what anyone else thinks, it is about what you like, and if you like it, you can’t be wrong.

The Newbie

I asked a question earlier about the java and mocha type cigars and should I get another Humidor.

The Aficionado

Oh, I will say that I have found most flavored cigars to be a waste of time. They will not mix well, as they will stink up your good ones and most are not the greatest blends of tobacco. I do like Al Capone cognac dipped cigarillos, but probably more because they were really the first cigar I took too, than because they were a good cigar.

As for stacking them, there is no problem putting them on top of each other. Wrappers on or off is a personal preference. Some smokers like it, and think that their whole humidor will create a total blend as they age, and that taking the wrapper off will accelerate the process. I leave them on to slow it down, but I really couldn’t say if it matters.

Enjoy them, we’ll have to get together soon and compare notes.

The Newbie
Cool good info. I was thinking of going with the pouches for the 18 and a beaded gel type for the bigger one, and humidity won't be an issue here.....already got the distilled water. Have 2 cutters they both have been used very sparingly and do a nice job no issue there. I know I need  a lighter but I thought I might start with wooden matches for now. I will be looking for 2 ashtrays one for the golf cart I have seen and one for home.

The diary was definitely on my list for all the reasons you stated. I want to grade them, so I know what I like and what I don't. That is why I went with so many different ones, my trial by fire. I am going to list them, describe them and who knows maybe blog about them,(that statement started this whole thing) I could do the cheap side, you could do the expensive side ;-) might even throw in some good bourbon talk.  I got a bottle of this last week just to mix things up... a florida micro brew bourbon 90 proof very smooth 1st sip bite then smooths out has a bit of a sweetness to it but not as much as say the honey whiskeys...      Palm Ridge Reserve™ $59  not cheap but I liked it. Somebody says I should try Blantons next. Unfortunately it takes me 6 months to a year to drink a fifth,  and of course I always have Makers Mark as my steady bourbon. I had to buy Crown royal for the Washington apple shot  we were introduced to on vacation and the Mrs. liked it  so we got the fixings and they have diet cranberry juice. crown/apple pucker/cranberry  very tasty but I still haven't tried the crown neat or on the rocks so I can't say how I like it.

anyway I am rambling thanks for your help and I will be asking lots of questions

1st new question when I read the reviews they mention pepper a lot what do they mean?

The Aficionado
Pepper would be a spicy bite. You get that a lot, as well as other flavors, and leathery type of tastes. It would be fun to do the blog ( so we have started one). If you can find it, try a brand that is just called Vintage Bourbon. Same price, very good. Blanton’s is great as well, but not an everyday Bourbon.

The Newbie
We both drink Maker's Mark as our everyday Bourbon  the big difference is I am also a Beer guy I will drink just about any beer but when I am home and not being fancy Yuengling Lager is my favorite, where the Aficionado tends to stay with his Makers Mark

After the original order was placed with 15 cigars, a new humidor, and everything needed to enjoy my new found hobby a normal person would stop and work on enjoying their new starter kit. A cigar tale from a newbie and the aficionado

It all started as a whim. While playing golf I like a stogie to slow me down and to relax. I know nothing about cigars and I mean nothing. I have read some reviews, but when I've gone to the local stores I've never seen what I am looking for and have been overwhelmed by the choices.

I spoke to the aficionado, asked for some help, and again was overwhelmed by all the choices and the lack of knowledge. The only way I could understand was that the aficionado and I got together and came up with a starter kit.  When you look at the kit, know that I already have a cutter, a cheap butane torch lighter, and a desire for a good cigar. "What's good?" I ask the aficionado. His best answer was "the ones you like"... GREAT, that's no help. When the starter kit was picked the idea was to be able to try several different cigars and try to find the ones that I like.

This was the kit that I was able to put together.

Boveda One-Step Seasoning Kit For 25 - 50 Cigars 1
Hygro-Thermometer 2 3/4 Inch Diameter 1
Xikar Drymistat Humidifier 25 Cigar Humidifier 1
'Private Stash' Traveler humidor holds 18 cigars With Humidifier 1
'Best Of Habano'                 Sampler Sampler of 10
varies 1
Famous Medium Body Sampler 'Q' Sampler of 5                  varies 1 total cost less than $100
I also picked up 2 CAO OSO sol lot 50

The shipment arrived last night. I think the UPS guy thought I was nuts. I was thanking him for getting them to me and I was like a kid on Christmas morning.

I got the box on the dining room table and started to open it up and found everything was in perfect condition, and packed well. I opened the box for the humidor and was sort of shocked at how small it was, but it fit all but 2 of the cigars.  Those will have to go into another box ( I'll get to that later). I had watched several different videos on YouTube  on how to set up the humidor and spent the night painting the inside with distilled water.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA08vNu-Vtc

That video was just one of many I watched. I finished up by putting the cloth on the plastic for the night.
